Nelson Mandela saw clip of ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom,’ says Naomie Harris

The team behind the much-anticipated film “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom” got the ultimate stamp of approval when the ailing former South African president saw some of it — and thought he was watching himself onscreen.

Naomie Harris, who plays ex-wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela in the ambitious biopic that’s making its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, says 95-year-old Nelson Mandela had a chance to see a clip from the movie at his home before he became critically ill.

It was a visually striking scene at the end of the movie when British actor Idris Elba, who stars as the legendary anti-apartheid leader, is walking through a sun-drenched field in South Africa with a group of children following him.

“Mandela actually asked Anant Singh, our producer who showed him the clip, and he said: ‘Is that me?’” the London-born Harris said in an interview.

“And then when Anant explained that it was Idris but with prosthetics … he started to laugh.”

Harris said Singh is a close friend of the freedom fighter and politician, and that’s why “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom” is the only film ever to have been fully endorsed by the Mandelas and the Mandela Foundation.

Based on Mandela’s 1994 autobiography, the story runs through his struggles leading the anti-apartheid movement, his 27-year imprisonment and his triumphant rise to the presidency.

It also focuses heavily on his marriage to Madikizela-Mandela, a strong-minded and polarizing South African politician who headed the African National Congress Women’s League.

Both Elba and Harris deliver powerful and spot-on performances under the direction of Justin Chadwick with a script by William Nicholson.

Harris said Singh wrote to Mandela when he was in prison 26 years ago, asking for the big-screen rights to his story, and developed “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom” over 17 years. The film is coming to light as Mandela remains in critical condition at home after suffering a lung infection.

It was important for Harris to have the blessing of Mandela’s family “because somehow it feeds into the ethos of the film.”

“It doesn’t bode well for me, and I think for a film, if you portray someone without asking for their blessing in making the film,” she said. “The Mandelas — both Winnie and Mandela, who were asked to sanction the movie — they were very generous about it and they just said, ‘Look, we want you to create the movie faithfully and truthfully, but we’re not going to be involved.’ And they were very hands-off about it.

“They didn’t even read the script, because they trusted Anant and they trusted us to do a good job.”

Harris even got to meet with Madikizela-Mandela, who was involved in the casting and approved both leads.

“I was incredibly intimidated meeting her,” said the statuesque star, whose other film credits include “28 Days Later,” the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise and the most recent Bond flick “Skyfall,” in which she played Eve Moneypenny.

“I thought, ‘Gosh, this formidable woman and what’s she going to think about me playing her,’ and I thought she was going to have all these ideas about how she wants to be played. So I was really nervous about it, and then when I met her, it was interesting because of course from doing all my research, I’d been researching her in her 40s; that was the time when she was at the height of being the most active and most political and violent as well.

“So I was expecting that same woman, but of course she’s 76 now and she’s an older, frailer woman and has found greater peace and is not such an activist anymore. So that was a real jarring experience, because she’s very different now.”

The Toronto International Film Festival runs through Sept. 15.

People-Justin-Timberlake-comeback

Justin TimberlakeIn a recent interview with Shade 45, pop singer Justin Timberlake spoke about his perceived feud with fellow music superstar Kanye West. Timberlake revealed that he and West came face-to-face at the VMAs, and he made it clear that there was admiration for West’s work.

“I told [Kanye West], ‘I f**k with you in a way you probably don’t even understand,’” Timberlake said. “We’ve never worked together so I don’t know that he fully understands what it is that I can do. That’s fine. As a matter of fact, Jay said the same thing. That’s okay. What I do agree with, is I would have loved to have had him as a part of the [recording] process…I hope something spawns out of that [conversation].”

“[Kanye] said the exact perfect thing, which was, ‘Well, the best way I know how to do that is just for us to sit down and just play music,’” Timberlake said. “And I said, ‘Exactly…’ I love ‘Ye so I feel like I understand what he’s doing. I love Yeezus, I love that album. I think he’s ahead of a lot, especially in his genre. He’s ahead of a lot, all the time. You have to at least listen and give him the benefit of the doubt because he’s earned that and I get it. I think people are going to appreciate it a lot more in the future.”
